On Thursday, July 24, 2025, at approximately 8:13 PM WAT, Starlink subscribers across Nigeria found their terminals suddenly offline, as SpaceX’s satellite network experienced its first major interruption of the year. Within the next 40 minutes, global outage‑tracking site Downdetector logged over 36,700 reports, with Nigerian users in Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Kano and beyond all seeing “no healthy upstream” errors pop up on their dishes.
By 10:28 PM WAT, traffic through the Starlink network began to recover, and shortly thereafter the company took to X to announce:
“The network issue has been resolved, and Starlink service has been restored.”
Michael Nicolls, Starlink’s Vice President of Engineering, later attributed the roughly 2½‑hour blackout to an internal software failure within its core network services, apologizing for the disruption and pledging a full post‑mortem review.
With connectivity back online, homes, businesses, remote clinics and even oil‑field operations that rely on Starlink’s low‑latency link in Nigeria’s major cities have regained their high‑speed satellite internet. This relief follows closely on the heels of Starlink’s resumption of new activations in late June—when sign‑ups reopened nationwide after an eight‑month regulatory pause.
