Buying a Used Starlink in Nigeria: What to Check and How to Transfer the Kit

Updated 20 October 2026 · 9 min read

The short answer

Yes, you can buy a used Starlink, but only pay in full once the seller has transferred the kit out of their Starlink account. Under Starlink’s standard terms, a purchased kit can be transferred 120 days after purchase or 90 days after activation, whichever comes first, and only if the seller’s account is fully paid. Rented kits cannot be transferred at all.

Why a used Starlink is riskier than it looks

Every Starlink kit is tied to one Starlink account. Handing over the box does not move the kit to you; only the account holder can release it. That one fact sits behind most used-kit problems:

  • It is still on the seller’s account. Until the seller transfers it, you cannot activate it. If they disappear after you pay, your only route is a support ticket with Starlink, with no promise of success.
  • The seller owes Starlink money. Under Starlink’s standard terms, unpaid bills mean service is suspended until they are paid, and a transfer needs the account paid in full. A seller in arrears cannot release the kit until they settle up.
  • It is too new to transfer. Inside the 120-day or 90-day window, the seller simply cannot do it yet.
  • It was rented, not bought. Rented kits belong to Starlink and cannot be transferred.
  • It was stolen. A thief is not the account holder, so cannot transfer the kit to you.
  • It was bought or used in another country. Starlink has not published a clear rule we can point to for kits first used abroad, and reports disagree. Do not assume a foreign kit will activate in Nigeria.
  • Parts are damaged or missing. A cut cable or the wrong router turns a bargain into a second purchase.
  • You may not get the plan you expect. Residential is not open to new customers in most locations, so a used kit will usually go on a Priority plan (see below).
  • Little or no warranty is left. Starlink’s warranty runs from the original purchase date.

Price is not always on your side either. In November 2025, the press reported used kits selling for more than new ones from independent sellers. Before you agree a figure, compare it with our current price for a brand-new kit in our Starlink price guide. And if a listing asks for full payment before you have seen the kit, read our guide to Starlink scams in Nigeria first.

How Starlink kit transfer works

The rules

These come from Starlink’s published terms (the version we could read is the Irish one; Nigeria’s may word them differently):

  • Only owners of purchased kits may transfer them. Rented kits are excluded.
  • No transfer until 120 days after purchase or 90 days after activation, whichever comes first.
  • The seller’s account must be paid in full and in good standing.
  • The plan the buyer wants must have network capacity at the buyer’s address.
  • The service agreement itself cannot be handed over. The buyer signs up for their own plan.
  • If the seller signed up with a fixed commitment period, transferring the kit can trigger a commitment-related fee.

Working out when a kit can be transferred

Say the seller bought the kit on 1 March and activated it on 10 March.

  • 120 days after purchase: 1 March + 120 days = 29 June.
  • 90 days after activation: 10 March + 90 days = 8 June.
  • The earlier date wins, so the kit can be transferred from 8 June.

Ask for both dates and the original receipt, and do the sum yourself.

What the seller does

Starlink’s website changes, so treat these steps (from 2025 and 2026 guides) as a guide, not exact wording:

  1. Write down the kit number and Starlink ID and give them to the buyer. Once the kit is transferred, it disappears from the seller’s account.
  2. Sign in at starlink.com, open “Your Starlinks” and choose Manage next to the kit.
  3. Cancel the service and choose Transfer, then confirm. The seller can enter the buyer’s email so Starlink sends them an activation link. A 2026 guide also describes choosing “I want to transfer my Starlink” as the reason for cancelling.
  4. Factory reset the router, and any mesh routers, before handing everything over.

The seller’s service stops immediately, and unused days in their billing month are lost.

What the buyer does

  1. Go to starlink.com/activate and enter the kit number, Starlink ID or serial number.
  2. Sign in or create your own account, in your own name and email.
  3. Enter your service address, choose a plan and pay the first month.

If activation says the kit is already assigned to an account, the seller has not finished the transfer. Do not hand over the balance until it goes through. Our Starlink setup and activation guide covers the rest of the set-up.

Checklist before you pay for a used Starlink

  1. Meet in person, ideally where the kit is installed, or in a busy public place.
  2. See it online. On the seller’s phone, the Starlink app should show the kit online. Run a speed test and look for obstruction or hardware alerts.
  3. Match the numbers. The kit number on the box label should match the kit in the seller’s app or account. Our guide to which Starlink you have and where to find the kit number shows where each number lives.
  4. Check every part: dish, kickstand or mount, router, power supply and cable. Run your hand along the whole cable for cuts and crushed sections, and look at both connectors. Gen 2 and Gen 3 cables are not interchangeable.
  5. Ask for the original receipt. It proves ownership and shows when the warranty started.
  6. Confirm the dates and the balance. Is the kit past the 120-day or 90-day mark, and is the seller’s account fully paid?
  7. Check plan availability at your address before you commit (more on this below).
  8. Watch the transfer happen, then start activation on your own phone before paying the balance. Pay by bank transfer so there is a record.
  9. Get a written receipt with both names and phone numbers, the kit number, the date and the amount.

Will you get the plan you want?

Starlink’s website lists Residential at ₦57,000 a month, the Standard kit at ₦590,000 and the Mini at ₦318,000. In most locations, though, including Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt, Residential is not open to new customers and kits at those prices are rarely available. A used kit does not change that, because the buyer signs up for a new plan: expect a Priority plan such as our small business plan at ₦89,000 a month, a Starlink Priority plan with unlimited data. What you can actually get new today is a kit for immediate pickup at ₦690,000 (Standard) or ₦480,000 (Mini) at our current prices, so weigh any used price against those. We check what Starlink is offering at your address before you pay.

If you already have Residential, think twice before cancelling or pausing it: Starlink’s standard terms say pausing with Standby Mode (where it is offered) does not guarantee you can sign back up for Residential later.

Are refurbished or foreign-used Starlink kits good?

A “refurbished” kit from a shop or an individual is still a used kit. Nothing on the box tells you who repaired it or what was replaced, so apply the same checklist, insist on the same transfer, and ask for the original purchase receipt as well as any repair receipt.

Kits brought in from abroad (“UK-used” or “US-used”) carry the extra country question above. Before paying, ask the seller where the kit was first activated, and talk to us before you hand over any money.

Does the warranty transfer with a used kit?

Starlink’s warranty for Standard and Mini kits sold outside the EU and UK is 12 months from the original purchase date. The warranty text does not say what happens when a kit is resold. Guides report that any remaining warranty stays tied to the original purchase date, so a kit bought ten months ago has about two months left at most. Keep the original receipt: without it you cannot show when the warranty started.

To claim, you describe the fault to Starlink and return the faulty part, and Starlink says it fixes confirmed failures within 30 days of receiving the claim. We can advise on next steps if you think a part is faulty.

Used, new or rented?

A used kit can save money if every check passes, but you carry the risk. A new kit is covered by Starlink’s one-year limited warranty and has no transfer to arrange, and you can buy a new Starlink kit from ZuraLink Limited with pay on delivery in Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt. A kit someone rented from Starlink is never theirs to sell.

How we can help with a used kit

New Starlink kit unboxed for a home set-up
A new Starlink kit unboxed before our installers set it up at a client’s home.

Before you pay, message us the kit’s details (the kit number and photos of the box label, dish, router and cable) and we will tell you what to check. Once the seller has transferred it, our Starlink activation service gets it live, usually about 30 minutes after payment, and our installers can mount and set it up at your place in the same visit. Moving a kit you already own to a new house or state is an address change, not a transfer; see our guide to changing your Starlink service address. Used Starlink FAQs

Can a Starlink kit be transferred to a new owner?

Yes, if it was bought rather than rented, the waiting period has passed and the seller’s account is fully paid. The seller starts the transfer from their account, then you activate the kit on yours.

How long after buying can a Starlink be transferred?

Starlink’s standard terms allow it 120 days after purchase or 90 days after activation, whichever comes first.

What if the seller has disappeared and the kit is still on their account?

Only the account holder can transfer it. Your fallback is a support ticket with Starlink, with your proof of purchase, photos of the kit labels and a screenshot of the error, but there is no guarantee it will be released.

Is it safe to buy a used Starlink on Jiji?

It can be, if you meet the seller, see the kit online and watch the transfer before paying in full. Never pay the whole amount for a kit you have not seen.

Can I buy a used kit in a sold-out area?

You can buy the hardware, but you sign up for a new plan, and Residential is not open to new customers in most locations. Expect a Priority plan such as our small business plan, and check what is offered at your address before you pay.
