Is Starlink Unlimited in Nigeria? Data, Priority Data and Fair Use Explained

Updated 20 October 2026 · 8 min read

The short answer

Yes, in practice: Starlink data in Nigeria does not run out. Starlink’s home plan, Residential, has no data cap, but it is not open to new customers in most locations.

Our small business plan at ₦89,000 a month, a Starlink Priority plan, is unlimited too: on the Nigerian accounts we sell and manage, once its priority data is used up, the service carries on with unlimited standard data at lower network priority. Our Enterprise plans work the same way.

Is Starlink unlimited in Nigeria?

Each plan below is unlimited in practice. What changes is the price, and how much faster priority data comes first.

Plan Monthly price Is the data unlimited?
Residential (Starlink’s home plan) ₦57,000 on Starlink’s website Yes: unlimited standard data
Our small business plan (a Starlink Priority plan) ₦89,000 (our price) Yes: priority data first, then unlimited standard data at lower network priority
Our Enterprise 1 TB, 2 TB and 6 TB plans (Starlink Priority plans) ₦120,000, ₦210,000 and ₦600,000 (our prices) Yes: 1, 2 or 6 TB of priority data first, then unlimited standard data at lower network priority

Starlink’s website lists Residential at ₦57,000 a month, but in most locations, including Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt, it is not open to new customers. New customers get a Priority plan such as our small business plan instead.

Residential itself has been unlimited since 2023, when Starlink dropped the 1TB monthly cap it had announced in December 2022 and moved fixed allowances of Priority data to business plans. You will still find Nigerian blogs claiming Residential has a “1TB fair usage cap” or “1TB of priority data”. That information dates from 2022-23 and is out of date. Our Starlink subscription guide explains the plans on offer, and our price guide shows what each costs through us today.

What Starlink’s Fair Use Policy says

“Unlimited” does not mean “always full speed”. Starlink’s Fair Use Policy says it “may temporarily reduce speeds if the network is congested”, and it allows network-management steps “including reducing speeds for some or all users”. Starlink’s standard terms, which we have not seen confirmed for Nigeria, add that Priority data “is given network precedence over Residential and Roam data”, and that Residential users “are most likely to be impacted during peak usage hours”.

In practice that means:

  • Your data does not run out on Residential or on the Priority plans we sell, but peak hours can be slower than quiet ones.
  • Roam sits at the lowest priority on Starlink’s network, below Residential.
  • Priority plans keep their precedence while their priority data lasts, then run on standard data at lower network priority.

Slow speeds have other causes too, from trees in the dish’s view to weak Wi-Fi indoors. Our guide to why Starlink is slow and how to fix it takes you through them.

Standard data vs Priority data

Standard data Priority data
Which plans Residential and Roam, and Priority plans after their priority data Priority (business) plans, called Local Priority and Global Priority since 2025; Nigerian press calls it “Business (Priority)”
How much Unlimited on Residential A fixed monthly allowance, such as 1 TB, 2 TB or 6 TB on our Enterprise plans
Network precedence Lower, with Roam lowest Highest
At busy times May slow down Keeps precedence while the allowance lasts
When the allowance is used up No allowance to use up Unlimited standard data follows, on the Nigerian accounts we manage

What happens when Priority data runs out?

On the Nigerian accounts we sell and manage, once a Priority plan’s priority data is used up, the service carries on with unlimited standard data at lower network priority. Nothing is cut off and there is nothing extra to pay, though busy times can be slower until the next billing cycle brings fresh priority data.

Since Starlink introduced Local Priority and Global Priority in 2025, its worldwide terms have described a fallback to about 1 Mbps down and 0.5 Mbps up once the allowance is used. In our experience, that does not apply to the Nigerian accounts we sell and manage.

How to buy more Priority data

You do not need to, but extra data keeps you on faster priority data for more of the month. On Starlink’s worldwide Priority plans, customers can add data from their Starlink account in three ways (the options on Nigerian accounts may differ):

  • a one-off 50 GB top-up;
  • automatic top-ups, so you stay on priority data;
  • a bigger monthly allowance, raised in blocks of 50 GB or 500 GB.

Extra data you opt into is billed at the end of the billing cycle. We cannot quote Starlink’s Nigerian top-up prices, so check the cost in your account before you opt in. If your team uses up its priority data every month, compare top-ups with one of our larger Enterprise plans; our guide to paying for, renewing or changing your Starlink plan covers plan changes. On Residential there is nothing to buy, because there is no cap.

Can Starlink data finish? Why you might see 0.5 Mbps

On Residential, no, and on the Priority plans we sell, using up the priority data moves you to standard data, not to zero. If your Starlink feels as if the data has “finished”, something else is going on. These are the situations where speeds really do fall to a crawl:

  • The service is on Standby. From September 2025, in many countries, Starlink replaced free pausing with a paid Standby Mode, which Starlink’s standard terms say gives speeds of up to 500 kbps (0.5 Mbps) download and upload “where available”. We have not confirmed whether Nigerian accounts have it, but if your speed sits at about 0.5 Mbps, check whether your service has been paused.
  • A capped Roam plan has hit its limit. In some countries, Roam plans come with a fixed data allowance and drop to low speed after it. Check what your Roam plan includes in your Starlink account.
  • The dish shows Restricted. On capped plans, reaching the limit can put the dish into Restricted status, where only Starlink’s own app and website load.

How much data does streaming and everyday use take?

This matters most if you want to stay on a Priority plan’s faster priority data all month. On Residential, and once the priority data is used up, it mainly explains why the house feels slow when everyone streams at once.

Activity, per device Data per hour Where the figure comes from
Netflix, Low quality Up to 0.3 GB Netflix
Netflix, Medium quality Up to 0.7 GB Netflix
Netflix, High, SD Up to 1 GB Netflix
Netflix, High, HD Up to 3 GB Netflix
Netflix, High, 4K Up to 7 GB Netflix
YouTube, 480p About 0.5 GB Our estimate
YouTube, 720p About 1.1 GB Our estimate
YouTube, 1080p About 2.25 GB Our estimate
YouTube, 4K About 9 GB Our estimate

YouTube publishes recommended speeds, not data use, so the YouTube rows are estimates. A stream running at 1 Mbps for an hour moves 1 × 3,600 seconds = 3,600 megabits, which is 450 megabytes, or about 0.45 GB. YouTube recommends 5 Mbps for 1080p, so 5 × 0.45 = 2.25 GB an hour. MultiChoice does not publish DStv Stream data figures that we could find, so use the Netflix rows as a rough guide for similar picture quality.

A worked example

A family watches 4 hours of Netflix in HD each evening, and two teenagers each watch 2 hours of YouTube at 1080p a day:

  • Netflix: 4 hours × 3 GB = 12 GB a day
  • YouTube: 2 people × 2 hours × 2.25 GB = 9 GB a day
  • Total: 21 GB a day × 30 days = 630 GB a month

On Residential, that is fine. On our Enterprise 1 TB plan it uses 63% of the month’s priority data (630 ÷ 1,000). A 50 GB priority allowance would be used up in under three days (50 ÷ 21 = 2.4 days), leaving the rest of the month on standard data. For TV in particular, see our guide to watching DStv Stream, Netflix and live sport on Starlink.

Why is Starlink using so much data?

Phones backing up photos, computer and game updates, and smart TVs that auto-play the next episode all run in the background. The Starlink app lists the devices connected to your network, which helps you find the heavy user. This costs nothing extra, but on a Priority plan it uses up the priority data sooner, so turn off auto-play and any large automatic downloads you do not need.

Starlink unlimited data FAQs

Is Starlink Nigeria unlimited?

In practice, yes. Residential has no cap but is closed to new customers in most locations, and the Priority plans we sell carry on with unlimited standard data once their priority data is used up.

How much is Starlink’s unlimited plan in Nigeria?

Our small business plan, a Starlink Priority plan with unlimited data, is ₦89,000 a month at our current price. Starlink’s website lists Residential at ₦57,000, but new customers cannot get it in most locations.

Does Starlink have a fair usage policy?

Yes. Starlink can slow speeds for a while when the network is congested, and Starlink’s standard terms say Residential users are the most likely to notice it at peak hours. It slows speeds rather than capping your data.

Can I buy extra data on Starlink?

On Priority plans, yes: you can add a top-up or raise your monthly allowance in your Starlink account, which keeps you on faster priority data for longer. Residential has no cap, so there is nothing to buy.

Does Starlink have an internet quota or data cap?

Not on Residential, and not in practice on the Priority plans we sell: their monthly quota is for priority data, and standard data carries on after it. Some Roam plans in other countries come with a capped allowance.

Why is my Starlink stuck at 0.5 Mbps?

A speed that low, steady all day, points to a service on Standby or a capped plan at its limit. Check your plan and billing status in your Starlink account first.
