How to Find or Change Your Starlink Wi-Fi Password

Updated 20 October 2026 · 5 min read

The short answer

Starlink has no default Wi-Fi password. On first set-up, the router broadcasts an open network called “STARLINK” and you choose your own name and password. To change it later, connect to the Starlink Wi-Fi, open the Starlink app and go to Settings → Router (older app versions: Settings → Networks). If nobody remembers it, a factory reset brings back the open “STARLINK” network so you can start again.

Where is my Starlink Wi-Fi password?

Starlink publishes no default password, and the router starts on an open network, so there is no factory password to look up. The password is whatever was chosen at set-up, by you, a family member or your installer. Starlink calls setting one “optional but recommended”, so some kits still run the open “STARLINK” network with no password at all.

If one phone is still connected, it can usually share the network. On most recent Android phones, tap the connected network in Wi-Fi settings and choose Share to show a QR code, often with the password under it. On a recent iPhone, tap the info button next to the network to view the password. Otherwise, set a new one in the app.

How to change your Starlink Wi-Fi password

  1. Connect your phone to the Starlink Wi-Fi. The app can only change router settings on the Starlink network, not over mobile data.
  2. Open the Starlink app and go to Settings → Router (older versions: Settings → Networks), as the menus read at the time of writing.
  3. Tap your network name.
  4. Edit “Wi-Fi Network Name” and “Wi-Fi Password” as needed.
  5. Tap Save.
  6. Rejoin the network on every device with the new password. Your own phone drops off too.

App layouts change, so if your screens differ, look for the router or network settings. The same app runs the Starlink Mini’s built-in Wi-Fi. Starlink mesh nodes extend the main router’s network, so you change the password once, on the main router.

Forgot the password? How to reset it

If a connected phone can still open the app, just set a new password. If no device is connected, factory reset the router. This erases your network name, password and other custom settings, and also ends bypass mode if it was on.

  • Router 3 (Standard Gen 3 kit): press the reset button with a paper clip. It is on the back, between the two Ethernet ports, under the rubber cover.
  • Starlink Mini: press the reset icon on the back firmly until it clicks and hold for 3 seconds. The light blinks quickly, then goes off when the reset is complete.
  • Gen 2 router (older kit): no reset button; it is reset by power-cycling several times in a row. Guides disagree on the count, so ask us or Starlink support.
  • Router Mini: Starlink’s guide does not describe a reset method, so contact support first.

After the reset, join the open “STARLINK” network. A browser page asks for a new network name and password, or you can use the app; our Starlink setup and activation guide walks through it. If a mesh node does not come back, the app’s pairing prompt adds it again with a tap on Pair. If the app cannot reach the router at all, see our guide to fixing Router unreachable.

Can Starlink be password protected?

Yes. Once you set a password, Router 3 and the Starlink Mini protect the Wi-Fi with WPA2 encryption. If your phone lists “STARLINK” as an “unsecured network”, no password has been set yet, or the router was recently reset. Set one straight away.

A guest network for visitors

Since March 2026, each network in the app can be set to Default, Guest or Auto mode. Guest stops devices on it from talking to each other, which suits visitors and tenants; Auto, for vehicles and boats, keeps Wi-Fi off until Starlink is online. At least one network must stay in Default. Our Starlink Wi-Fi and networking guide covers mesh and guest set-ups in more depth.

Choosing a good Starlink password

  • Use at least 12 characters. Three or four unrelated words with a number are easier to type on a TV than a jumble of symbols.
  • Avoid phone numbers, names and anything like “starlink123”.
  • Give visitors the guest network, and change the main password when staff leave or tenants move out. Changing it is also the surest way to remove devices connected to your Starlink that should not be there.
  • Hiding the network name keeps it off casual lists but is not real security.

For account security, VPNs and the wider risks, read our guide to whether Starlink is secure.

Starlink Wi-Fi Password FAQs

Does Starlink have a default Wi-Fi password?

No. The router starts with an open network called “STARLINK”, and you set the password during set-up.

Can I change my Starlink password when I am away from home?

No. The app needs your phone to be on the Starlink Wi-Fi to change router settings.

What happens to my devices after I change the password?

Every device disconnects and must rejoin with the new password, including smart TVs and cameras.

Do Starlink mesh nodes need their own password?

No. Mesh nodes carry the main router’s network, so you change it once on the main router.
