Is Starlink Secure? Hacking, Tracking, Jamming and VPNs

Updated 20 October 2026 · 9 min read

The short answer

Starlink’s satellite link is encrypted, so the realistic risks are closer to home. Starlink says it encrypts information to and from your equipment and that satellites only see encrypted traffic. The weak points are the same as on any internet line: a weak Wi-Fi password, a stolen account login and unprotected devices. Starlink does not claim its encryption is end-to-end, so use HTTPS and a VPN for sensitive work, and lock down your Wi-Fi and Starlink account.

How Starlink protects your connection

Starlink’s privacy policy (updated January 2026) says: “We also encrypt information transmitted to and from your Starlink equipment.” Its security page, written for security researchers, adds that “satellites only see encrypted user traffic passing through them”. It describes public-key cryptography, digitally signed certificates, hardware-based storage for security keys and secure boot, which means the dish should only run software Starlink has signed.

What this does not mean: Starlink does not claim end-to-end encryption to the websites you visit. Once your traffic leaves Starlink’s network, it travels the internet like traffic from any other provider. Websites using HTTPS (the padlock in your browser) protect what you send them. Inside your home, the Wi-Fi on Router 3 and the Starlink Mini uses WPA2 encryption, which is only as strong as the password you set.

So the realistic risks are local, not in space: a guessable Wi-Fi password, a reused account password, an old router or a camera still on its factory login.

Can Starlink see your search history?

Starlink’s privacy policy lists what it collects from each kit: “Customer Technical Data” such as throughput, latency, connection quality, sky obstruction data, the device’s orientation and location, and the public IP addresses assigned to you over time. The policy describes location data as your general location, “not precise geolocation”, and says “we are merely connecting you to the Internet”.

The policy does not list browsing history, websites visited or the content of your traffic among the data it collects. That is an absence in the policy, not a promise, so we will not tell you Starlink “cannot” see your searches. Other points worth knowing:

  • Starlink’s Acceptable Use Policy allows it to analyse traffic patterns to manage the service and stop viruses and malicious code.
  • Starlink’s standard terms (we have not seen Nigeria’s version) say it can access your kit to perform support actions, collect limited diagnostic information and monitor performance.
  • Data may be shared with regulators or law enforcement where the law requires it, or in answer to lawful government requests.
  • Since January 2026, the global policy lets Starlink use customer data to train machine-learning and AI models, and share it with third-party collaborators for AI training unless you opt out. The opt-out is in your account’s user settings.

If you are in Nigeria, Starlink says its Nigeria Privacy Notice applies to you. It was added in late 2025 and is worth reading before you rely on any summary, including ours.

Can you see what people are searching on your Starlink?

Not from the Starlink app. It lists connected devices by name and hardware (MAC) address, and we know of no screen in it that shows websites visited. Searches on Google and most sites travel inside HTTPS, so even a third-party router with logging can usually see only which sites a device contacted, not what was searched or read. To keep children away from harmful sites, use the app’s content filter (“Malware” or “Malware and Adult Content”), which blocks sites through Cloudflare’s DNS service rather than by watching people. If you monitor a shared network at work, tell the people who use it.

Can Starlink be tracked by the government?

Starlink knows who you are and where you are in the ordinary way any provider does: your account details, your service address, your general location and your IP address history. As above, it may share data where applicable law requires it. Starlink is licensed by the NCC, so it operates under Nigerian regulation; our guide to whether Starlink is legal in Nigeria covers the licences.

On the technical side, Starlink says “the user terminal doesn’t share its precise location information with the satellite”; the satellite only needs to know which cell (area) you are in. On your own network, the dish’s precise location is not available to other devices unless you switch on location access on the local network in the Starlink app, which is off by default.

Is there a Starlink “kill switch”?

Starlink controls its own network. Its standard terms allow it to suspend or end service for breaking the terms, for unpaid bills, or where your location is not authorised, and it can cut service to a kit from its side. If you meant the kill switch in a VPN app, that is a feature which cuts your internet if the VPN drops, so nothing leaks outside the tunnel. It works on Starlink like on any connection.

Can Starlink be jammed or blocked?

Jamming means flooding the radio frequencies a system uses with noise so the real signal cannot get through. It has happened to Starlink. In January 2026, the monitoring group Filter.Watch reported Iran jamming Starlink in parts of Tehran during a nationwide internet blackout, with packet loss of up to 40%, and analysts compared it with Russian jamming of terminals in Ukraine. Iran also bans owning Starlink.

Nigeria is different: Starlink is licensed here. The NCC has said that importing, selling, possessing or using radio signal jammers is banned unless authorised, under the Nigerian Communications Act, with prosecution and fines possible. The NCC has separately warned that acquiring or operating signal boosters without its authorisation is prohibited. Starlink’s standard terms also forbid interfering with Starlink’s network or other networks. Do not buy any “jammer” or “booster” sold online for Starlink.

In everyday Nigerian use, what “blocks” Starlink is far more ordinary: a tree or a neighbour’s new floor in the dish’s view (see our guide to fixing Starlink obstructions), or an account problem that leaves the app saying “Restricted” or “Disabled”.

Using a VPN on Starlink

Starlink is not a VPN. It is your internet provider: it encrypts traffic to and from your equipment, but it does not claim to protect it beyond its own network. A VPN encrypts your traffic from your device all the way to the VPN provider, so neither the local network nor your internet provider can see where it goes. Starlink’s plans do not include a VPN; you buy one from a VPN provider and run its app on your phone, laptop or router. Treat any “Starlink VPN” offer as unofficial.

  • VPN apps work. They connect outwards, which works through the carrier-grade NAT (CGNAT) used on Residential plans. We found no official Starlink statement on VPNs either way.
  • Hosting a VPN server is harder. Letting staff connect in to an office VPN needs incoming connections, which CGNAT blocks. You need a public IPv4 address (an option on Priority plans, which most new customers have) and your own router; our guide to bypass mode and public IP explains how.
  • If the VPN connects but pages stall, VPN providers suggest trying the WireGuard protocol or lowering the VPN’s MTU setting to around 1400.

How to secure your Starlink network

  1. Set a strong Wi-Fi password. On first set-up, and after a factory reset, the router broadcasts an open network called “STARLINK”. That is why phones show it as an “unsecured network” until you set a name and password. Our guide to changing your Starlink Wi-Fi password has the steps.
  2. Give visitors a guest network. Since March 2026, each network in the app can be set to Guest mode, which stops devices on it from talking to each other.
  3. Protect your Starlink account. In 2023, attackers took over Starlink accounts using passwords leaked from other websites and ordered hardware on them. Anyone with your login can manage your service, so use a unique password and switch on two-step verification if your account offers it. Starlink says it never asks for personal details by text, email or phone; our guide to Starlink scams in Nigeria shows what fake customer care looks like.
  4. Replace unsupported hardware. In December 2025, Starlink ended software and security support for the Gen 1 router (the one with the original round dish) and offered affected customers a free Router Mini.
  5. Separate cameras and staff on business networks. The Starlink router has no VLANs or firewall rules. Offices and estates that need separate networks for CCTV, staff and guests use a third-party router; our Starlink Wi-Fi and networking guide explains the options.

CCTV on Starlink

Change every camera and recorder’s default password, keep their firmware up to date, and view them through the maker’s app rather than by opening ports. Without a public IPv4 address, as on Residential plans, CGNAT means you cannot open ports for cameras in any case, so most recorders reach their apps through the maker’s cloud service. That makes the camera’s own password and updates the main line of defence.

Starlink Security FAQs

Can Starlink internet be hacked?

The satellite link is encrypted, so attacks usually target the weaker points: your Wi-Fi password, your Starlink account login and the devices on your network. Secure those and you remove most of the risk.

Why does my phone say the Starlink network is unsecured?

The router broadcasts an open “STARLINK” network until you set a name and password, and again after a factory reset. Set a password in the app and the warning goes.

Can Starlink see my search history?

Starlink’s privacy policy does not list browsing history among the data it collects, and searches on most sites are protected by HTTPS. Use a VPN if you want your provider to see as little as possible.

Will a VPN work with Starlink?

Ordinary VPN apps connect outwards, so they normally work on any plan. Hosting your own VPN server needs a public IPv4 address, which is offered as an option on Priority plans; most new customers in Nigeria are on one, so ask us whether it is switched on for yours.

Can Starlink be jammed in Nigeria?

Jamming is technically possible and has been reported abroad, but owning or using jammers in Nigeria is banned without NCC authorisation.
