The short answer
If MTN Fibre X reaches your street, it is the better buy: it costs less each month, needs no expensive kit and is sold as unlimited. Starlink wins wherever fibre does not reach, and for heavy users it beats MTN’s unlimited 5G router plans, which slow to 5 Mbps after 400 GB or 800 GB. Where fibre does not reach but MTN’s 5G signal is strong, MTN 5G is the cheapest way in for moderate use.
Starlink vs MTN at a glance
MTN figures marked “MTN” come from MTN’s own website or support account; the rest come from Nigerian guides that list MTN’s prices, so check with MTN before you buy. The Starlink column uses ZuraLink Limited’s current prices (October 2026), not Starlink’s own; see our Starlink price guide for today’s figures.
| Starlink (our prices) | MTN 5G router | MTN Fibre X | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Where it works | Across Nigeria wherever the dish has a clear view of the sky; Residential is closed to new customers in most locations, so new customers get a Priority plan | Where MTN has 5G: reported in 11 locations, including Lagos, Abuja, Rivers and Kano (December 2025) | Select estates and areas only, checked by address |
| Upfront cost | Standard kit ₦690,000 or Mini ₦480,000; installation ₦120,000 if we install; plus Starlink’s own activation fee in Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt and some other areas | 5G router ₦40,000 (MTN) | Free installation in covered areas (MTN) |
| Monthly cost | Small business plan ₦89,000 (our price), a Starlink Priority plan | Gold ₦40,000, Diamond ₦65,000 per 30 days (reported June 2026) | ₦30,000 for 50 Mbps up to ₦200,000 for 1 Gbps per 30 days (reported June and September 2026) |
| Speed | 50 to 121 Mbps in our handover tests; Ookla’s Nigeria median below 50 Mbps (2025-26) | Up to 50 Mbps (Gold) or 100 Mbps (Diamond) | Plan speeds from 50 Mbps to 1 Gbps |
| Latency | 23 to 92 ms in our handover tests | Depends on signal; not published | Usually the lowest of the three, as it runs on cable |
| Data caps | Unlimited on our small business plan, at lower network priority once its priority data is used up; can slow at busy times | Gold slows to 5 Mbps after 400 GB, Diamond after 800 GB (MTN) | Described by guides as unlimited with no throttling |
| Power at home | Standard dish 75 to 100 W on average; Mini 25 to 40 W | One small indoor router | One small router |
| Installation | Dish mounted outside by our installers, one visit of two to three hours | Plug in indoors | Installed by MTN |
| Best for | Places without fibre, sites, businesses, backup | Moderate personal use in strong 5G areas | Heavy users in covered estates |
Two MTN details matter more than they look. First, MTN’s terms say the Gold and Diamond unlimited plans are for MTN 5G routers and for personal, non-commercial use, so an office should not rely on them. Second, MTN also advertises “FlyX” as truly unlimited at up to 100 Mbps with a free router and installation, but its 5G page showed no price for it in October 2026.
One Starlink detail matters too. Starlink’s website lists Residential at ₦57,000 a month, the Standard kit at ₦590,000 and the Mini at ₦318,000. In most locations, though, Residential is not open to new customers and kits at those prices are rarely available. What you can actually get today is a kit for immediate pickup at our prices, on a small business plan at ₦89,000 a month, so that is what we compare here.
What a year costs: a worked example
Here is the first year for a family home that wants about 100 Mbps, using the figures above:
- Starlink, Standard kit installed (our prices): ₦1,109,000 upfront (kit, installation, mount, activation, delivery and the first month on our small business plan) + 11 × ₦89,000 (₦979,000) = ₦2,088,000.
- MTN 5G Diamond: ₦40,000 router + 12 × ₦65,000 (₦780,000) = ₦820,000, with speeds falling to 5 Mbps after 800 GB in a 30-day period.
- MTN Fibre X 100 Mbps: free installation + 12 × ₦45,000 = ₦540,000.
Starlink also charges its own activation fee in Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt and some other areas. The amount changes from time to time and comes on top of our prices, so it is not in the total above; we confirm it before you pay.
From the second year, Starlink costs 12 × ₦89,000 = ₦1,068,000 a year, against ₦780,000 for Diamond and ₦540,000 for Fibre X. On price alone, Starlink loses wherever the other two work well. Its case is reach, unlimited data, and not depending on a cable to your street or a strong mast nearby.
Where Starlink wins
- No fibre and weak 5G. That describes much of Nigeria outside the main cities and estates. Our installers cover all 36 states and the FCT; Starlink coverage across Nigeria explains where it works.
- Heavy use. Netflix says HD uses up to 3 GB an hour per device. Two TVs streaming HD for 5 hours a day use 2 × 5 × 3 = 30 GB a day, or 900 GB in 30 days: past Diamond’s 800 GB slow-down point. Our small business plan has unlimited data: on the Nigerian accounts we sell and manage, once its priority data is used up, the service carries on with unlimited standard data at lower network priority.
- Businesses. MTN’s unlimited 5G router plans are for personal use. Starlink’s Priority plans are business plans, and as well as our small business plan we sell Enterprise plans with 1 TB, 2 TB or 6 TB of priority data (₦120,000, ₦210,000 and ₦600,000 a month at our prices).
- Sites, farms and boats. Anywhere with a clear sky, including places no cable or 5G mast will reach.
- Speed you can check. On our installs, Starlink measured 50 to 121 Mbps at handover. Our Starlink speed guide sets out what to expect at different times.
Where MTN wins
- Price. Fibre X at ₦30,000 for 50 Mbps, a price MTN’s support account has confirmed, is about a third of our small business plan’s price (30,000 ÷ 89,000 = 0.34), with no kit to buy.
- Top speed and latency on fibre. Fibre X plans run up to 1 Gbps over cable, with no need for a clear sky.
- Low upfront cost on 5G. A ₦40,000 router against ₦480,000 or more for a Starlink kit at our prices.
- No roof work. The 5G router sits indoors; fibre is installed by MTN.
- Easier on your inverter. A small router uses far less power than a Starlink dish running all day.
Using both: Starlink as backup to fibre or 5G
For offices, clinics, hotels and any business that loses money when offline, the strongest set-up is two connections from different networks: fibre or 5G as the main line, Starlink as the backup, or the other way round. A router with two internet ports (dual-WAN) switches over automatically when one fails. That needs a third-party router alongside Starlink, which we can supply and set up; our guide to using your own router with Starlink explains the set-up, including failover.
Other options: Airtel, Spectranet and Tizeti
Airtel’s SmartConnect 5G outdoor router launched at ₦25,000 including SIM and installation, then ₦25,000 a month for unlimited 50 Mbps or ₦45,000 for 100 Mbps (September 2025). Spectranet’s 4G plans include ₦20,000 for 100 GB over 30 days, and its Home Fibre reaches up to 1 Gbps in select estates (Spectranet’s site, October 2026). Tizeti’s Residential Unlimited was reported at ₦17,500 per 30 days in Lagos, Ogun and Port Harcourt (June 2026). Our Starlink vs alternatives guide compares them in more detail, and Starlink vs Amazon Leo covers other satellite services.
Our verdict by situation
| Your situation | Choose |
|---|---|
| Fibre X is available in your estate | Fibre X. Add Starlink only as a backup if downtime costs you money. |
| Strong MTN 5G signal, personal use under 400 to 800 GB a month | MTN 5G router. |
| No fibre and weak 5G | Starlink. |
| A business or office | Fibre or Starlink, ideally both. Not MTN’s personal unlimited plans. |
| Site, farm, camp or boat | Starlink. |

Starlink vs MTN FAQs
Is Starlink better than MTN 5G?
For heavy use, business use or places with weak 5G, yes. For moderate personal use where MTN’s 5G signal is strong, MTN costs far less upfront and each month.
Is Starlink faster than MTN Fibre X?
Not on the bigger Fibre X plans, which go up to 1 Gbps. Our Starlink handover tests ranged from 50 to 121 Mbps, similar to Fibre X’s 50 and 100 Mbps plans.
Does MTN 5G have unlimited data?
MTN calls Gold and Diamond unlimited, but its terms slow them to 5 Mbps after 400 GB and 800 GB respectively. Our Starlink small business plan has unlimited data: once its priority data is used up, it carries on with standard data at lower network priority, though speeds can dip at busy times.
Is there an MTN and Starlink partnership?
MTN Group was reported in December 2025 to be in talks with satellite providers, including Starlink. We have not seen any MTN and Starlink deal announced as of October 2026.
Can I use Starlink and MTN together?
Yes. With a dual-WAN router, one connection takes over automatically when the other drops, which is the most reliable set-up for a business.
