The short answer
Yes, Starlink works well for most online gaming in Nigeria, including EA FC, eFootball and PUBG Mobile. Starlink’s standard terms put typical latency at 25-60 ms on land, and on our installations we have measured 23 ms to 92 ms. EA FC and eFootball both list Lagos servers, which helps. Obstructions cause lag spikes, so a clear view of the sky and a wired connection matter more than your plan.
Is Starlink good for gaming? Latency from our installations
For online games, latency (ping) matters more than download speed. It is the time data takes to reach the game server and come back, measured in milliseconds (ms). As a rough guide, under about 50 ms feels instant in most games, up to about 100 ms is playable for most players, and above that you feel the delay in shooters and football games.
| Installation | Download | Latency | Measured with |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stone-coated roof, ridge mount above solar panels | 86 Mbps | 23 ms | Starlink app |
| Site cabin, bracket at the roof edge | 50.2 Mbps | 34 ms | Speedtest by Ookla |
| Two-storey home, dish on the roof slope | 121 Mbps | 85 ms | Starlink app |
| Rooftop dish on a flat parapet | 91 Mbps | 92 ms | Starlink app |
These are one-moment readings taken at handover, not a promise. For a wider view, Ookla put Starlink’s median latency in Nigeria at 55.88 ms in mid-2023, against 50.26 ms for all fixed broadband combined, and at 60 ms in early 2025. Starlink itself says latency ranges between 25 and 60 ms on land, and that it varies with location, time of day and the priority your plan gets on the network.
Starlink manages this because its satellites orbit far closer to Earth than the geostationary satellites behind older VSAT internet, which sit about 36,000 km up and add a long delay to every round trip. That is the key difference between satellite services for gamers: low-orbit Starlink is playable, while geostationary services are poor for fast online games. Amazon’s low-orbit Leo service had not launched commercially as of October 2026; our Starlink vs Amazon Leo comparison follows its progress.
Where are the game servers for Nigerian players?
Your in-game ping depends mostly on how far away the game’s server is. That is true on any connection, fibre or Starlink. Here is what we could confirm:
| Game | Servers serving Nigeria | How sure |
|---|---|---|
| EA SPORTS FC | EA lists an Africa region with data centres in Lagos and Johannesburg | Official (EA) |
| eFootball | Konami lists Lagos and Johannesburg among its Europe/Africa servers | Official (Konami) |
| PUBG Mobile | Local servers in Nigeria and South Africa launched in July 2025, with a “Server Node Selection” option to play within Africa or globally | Press reports |
| Call of Duty: Mobile | A dedicated Nigerian server was reported in December 2023; we could not confirm it is still running | Press report |
| Fortnite | No West or sub-Saharan African region in Epic’s server list; the listed regions include Europe and Middle East | Official (Epic) |
| Warzone, Black Ops, Diablo 4 and others | Not confirmed for Nigeria | Check in the game |
EA says it tries to connect you to your best data centre, which is often but not always the nearest, and can route you elsewhere if there are internet problems on the way. So even with a Lagos server, check the ping inside the game rather than trusting the Starlink app’s latency figure, which is not measured to the game’s server. If a game lets you choose a region, try each and keep the lowest. On eFootball, Quick Match is peer-to-peer, so your opponent’s connection matters as much as yours; League and Ranking Event matches use Konami’s servers.
For what affects speed and latency more generally, see our guide to Starlink speed in Nigeria.
Starlink vs fibre, 4G and 5G for gaming
| Connection | Latency | Stability | Main drawback |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fibre (MTN Fibre X, ipNX, Spectranet and others) | Usually the lowest | Very steady | Only available in select estates and areas |
| 5G router | Can be low with a strong signal | Varies with signal and how busy the mast is | Patchy coverage; MTN’s published terms (December 2025) drop its unlimited 5G router plans to 5 Mbps after 400 GB (Gold) or 800 GB (Diamond) |
| 4G router or MiFi | Usually higher | The most variable | Ping jumps when the cell is busy |
| Starlink | 25-60 ms on land (Starlink); 23-92 ms on our installs | Steady with a clear sky view; spikes when obstructed | Higher upfront cost; needs a clear view of the sky |
If good fibre reaches your street, it is the better line for competitive gaming. Starlink is the strongest option where fibre does not reach and mobile signal is weak or crowded, and a sound backup where it does. Our Starlink vs MTN 5G and Fibre X comparison covers cost and data limits.
Starlink and Xbox or PlayStation NAT type
On Residential plans, Starlink uses carrier-grade NAT (CGNAT): many customers share one public IPv4 address, so incoming connections cannot reach your console. Consoles behind CGNAT often report a Moderate or Strict NAT type on Xbox, or Type 2 or 3 on PlayStation. Matchmaking on dedicated game servers usually still works, but party chat, hosting a match and some peer-to-peer games can fail or take longer to connect.
The Starlink router has no port forwarding, so no setting on it will fix this. The real fix is a public IPv4 address, offered as an option on Priority (business) plans, plus your own router in bypass mode with UPnP or port forwarding turned on. If you are on a Priority plan, as most new customers in Nigeria are, ask us whether the public IPv4 option is switched on for yours. Our guide to bypass mode, CGNAT and public IP explains the set-up.
How to reduce lag when gaming on Starlink
- Wire the console or PC. Konami itself advises a wired connection for console play. Router 3 has two LAN ports, the Starlink Mini has an Ethernet port, and older Gen 2 kits need an adapter; see our Starlink Ethernet adapter guide. On a phone, stay close to the router or access point.
- Give the dish a completely clear view. Starlink says objects such as a tree branch, pole or roof between the dish and the satellites “will cause service interruptions”. In a match, even a brief interruption is a lag spike or a disconnect. Check the obstruction map in the app and read our guide to fixing Starlink obstructions.
- Stop big downloads during a match. Game updates, cloud backups and 4K streams on other devices fill the line. The connected-devices list in the Starlink app shows what else is on the network.
- Play off-peak when you can. Starlink says Residential users are most likely to be affected during peak usage hours, so evening ping can be higher.
- On Wi-Fi, use 5 GHz close to the router. The app can split the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands into separate network names so you can choose.
- Keep everything powered. After a power cut, the dish restarts and can take 5-20 minutes to find satellites again. Put the dish and router on an inverter or UPS; our guide to running Starlink without NEPA covers sizing.
If ping looks fine but the game still stutters, or speeds fall at certain times, work through our checklist on why Starlink is slow.
Which Starlink plan is best for gaming?
- Residential, if you already have it, is reported as unlimited in Nigeria, which matters because game downloads and updates are large. It is deprioritised against Priority plans at busy times and uses CGNAT.
- Priority (business) plans are what most new customers in Nigeria get, such as our small business plan, a Starlink Priority plan with unlimited data. Priority data gets network precedence over Residential and Roam, and these plans offer a public IPv4 option, which helps NAT type. On the Nigerian accounts we sell and manage, once a Priority plan’s priority data is used up, the service carries on with unlimited standard data at lower network priority, so big game downloads will not cut you off.
- Roam has the lowest network priority, so it is the weakest choice for gaming at home.
Kit choice matters less than placement. The Starlink Mini is fine for gaming while you travel, set up where you stay; for a home, the Standard (Gen 3) kit, with a separate Wi-Fi 6 router and Ethernet ports, is the easier set-up. Residential is not open to new customers in most locations, including Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt, so we confirm what is available at your address before you buy a Starlink kit from us.
Getting a gaming-ready Starlink set-up
ZuraLink Limited’s installers place the dish for a clear view of the sky, run Ethernet cable to the room where you play, and can check whether the public IPv4 option is on for your Priority plan and advise on the own-router set-up an open NAT type needs. Our Starlink installation service covers all 36 states and the FCT. WhatsApp us or call 0802 859 5303, any time of day.
Starlink Gaming FAQs
Is Starlink good for PUBG Mobile?
Yes, with a clear view of the sky. PUBG Mobile was reported to have launched local servers in Nigeria and South Africa in July 2025, so check the ping in the game and use its server node option.
Can I play EA FC or eFootball online with Starlink?
Yes. Both list a Lagos server. Football games punish lag spikes more than slightly higher ping, so wire the console and keep the dish free of obstructions.
Does Starlink work with Xbox Series X?
Yes. Connect it by Ethernet if you can. Without a public IPv4 address, as on Residential plans, you may see a Moderate or Strict NAT type because of CGNAT.
Why is my Starlink lagging in games?
The usual causes are a partial obstruction, other devices downloading at the same time, peak-hour congestion or a distant game server. Check the obstruction map first, then the in-game ping.
Is Starlink better than 4G for gaming?
Usually, especially where 4G signal is weak or busy, because Starlink’s latency is steadier. Good fibre beats both.
