Starlink SIM Card, “Starlink Chip” and Direct to Cell in Nigeria: What Is Real

Updated 20 October 2026 · 9 min read

The short answer

There is no Starlink SIM card, chip, pocket Wi-Fi or decoder, so there is no price for one: anything sold under those names is something else. Starlink’s satellite-to-phone service, Direct to Cell (renamed Starlink Mobile in March 2026), works through your normal mobile network’s SIM. Airtel has launched it in DR Congo and Uganda. In Nigeria it is planned, subject to regulatory approval, and as of October 2026 we have found no launch or launch date.

Is there a Starlink SIM card or “Starlink chip”?

No. As of October 2026, Starlink does not sell SIM cards, eSIMs, chips or phones to the public. Australia’s consumer group CHOICE has stated plainly that Starlink does not sell its own SIM cards, after finding Facebook adverts, some using Elon Musk’s picture, offering “Starlink SIM Card” deals with “no ongoing fees”. In 2026 a Starlink reseller in Indonesia warned that a “Starlink Pocket” modem and a “Starlink SIM Card” being sold on social media were fake, and that Starlink had released no products with those names.

The confusion is understandable, because Starlink does now connect some ordinary phones to satellites. But that service runs through your existing mobile operator and its SIM. In DR Congo, Airtel says customers need no dish, no separate handset and no firmware update. There is nothing extra to buy from a market stall.

The same goes for a “Starlink decoder”. Starlink is internet only: it has no TV channels and no decoder. You can still watch DStv Stream, YouTube and other services over a Starlink connection, which our guide to watching TV and streaming on Starlink explains.

What Jiji and Jumia sellers are actually selling

We searched Jiji.ng on 20 October 2026 to see what turns up under these names:

Search on Jiji.ng What the listings actually were
“starlink sim” 11 listings, none of them a SIM: Starlink Gen 3 (V4) kits, Starlink mesh routers, a business kit “with non account”, installation services, an MTN 5G router, a TP-Link extender, a Peplink router and a LAN adapter
“starlink pocket wifi” No listings
“starlink decoder” Power stations, Wi-Fi extenders, and DStv, GOtv and Starlink installation or router-repair services; no decoders

Jumia also lists Starlink kits. A “MiFi” or pocket router is a mobile-network product from networks such as MTN, not Starlink. If anyone offers you a Starlink SIM, chip or pocket device, especially for a one-off fee with “no subscription”, treat it as a scam. Our guide to Starlink scams in Nigeria lists the common tricks and what to do if you have already paid.

What is Starlink Direct to Cell (Starlink Mobile)?

Direct to Cell lets ordinary 4G LTE phones connect straight to Starlink satellites, with no dish. Each partner mobile operator lends Starlink some of its own mobile spectrum, and the satellites carry equipment that behaves like a mobile mast in space. Your phone connects when it is outdoors with a clear view of the sky and out of range of normal masts. The first Direct to Cell satellites launched in January 2024, and the service was renamed Starlink Mobile at MWC Barcelona on 2 March 2026. SpaceX said it then had about 650 of these satellites, service in 32 countries and about 10 million monthly users.

Today’s service is basic. It handles text messages and “light data” for selected apps, not full internet. In the USA, T-Mobile’s version supports texts, location sharing, emergency texts and data for a list of apps built for satellite, such as WhatsApp and Google Maps. Web browsing and video streaming are not supported, and there is no native satellite voice calling yet; calls only work inside data apps such as WhatsApp. SpaceX says a second generation of satellites, expected to start launching from mid-2027, will aim for speeds of up to about 150 Mbps per user in ideal conditions, but that is a company forecast.

This is a different system from Starlink’s home and business broadband, which uses a dish on your roof. Our guide to how Starlink satellites work explains the main network.

Starlink and Airtel: when is Direct to Cell coming to Nigeria?

Nigeria is in line through Airtel, but as of 20 October 2026 we have found no report of a Nigerian launch. Here is where things stand:

Date What happened
16–17 Dec 2025 Airtel Africa and SpaceX announce Starlink Direct to Cell for all 14 Airtel Africa markets, including Nigeria, from 2026, subject to approval in each country
18 Dec 2025 Airtel Nigeria’s CEO says it will launch in 2026 with data for selected apps, text messaging and USSD, for areas without mobile coverage, not to replace 4G and 5G in cities
12 Jan 2026 The NCC opens a public consultation on satellite direct-to-device services (comments due by 23 February 2026) and says it is not a licensing decision
Mar 2026 Airtel and Starlink test the service in Kenya; WhatsApp calls and messages, maps and Messenger work (Kenya was still awaiting regulatory approval in August 2026)
14 Aug 2026 First African launch, in DR Congo, branded Starlink Mobile
18 Aug 2026 A press report still describes Nigeria as planned for launch in 2026, subject to regulatory approval
24 Sep 2026 Launch in Uganda reported
20 Oct 2026 We found no report of a commercial launch in Nigeria

As reported in December 2025, the planned Nigerian service is expected to cover texting, USSD, mobile money and selected data apps such as WhatsApp on compatible 4G and 5G smartphones. Airtel puts its normal network coverage at about 88% of Nigeria’s population, and the NCC links direct-to-device service to about 23.3 million underserved Nigerians, so the target is places without mobile coverage. The NCC’s consultation paper on satellite direct-to-device services sets out the questions it is weighing.

Price, phones and iPhones

No Nigerian price has been announced. In DR Congo, users get 30 days free after registering in the MyAirtel app, and the service then runs on eligible data bundles; Airtel has not published the add-on price or a full list of supported phones. At launch there it works only on compatible LTE Android phones, with iPhone support promised “in the future” without a date. MTN was reported in December 2025 to be in talks with satellite providers including Starlink, but we have seen no deal announced. In October 2026, reports also described SpaceX planning a Starlink Mobile cellular service of its own, alongside purchases of US mobile spectrum; we have seen nothing of that kind announced for Nigeria.

Can my phone connect to Starlink today?

Yes, through a Starlink kit’s Wi-Fi. Any phone, laptop or smart TV that uses Wi-Fi can join a Starlink network, iPhone and Android alike. On an iPhone you simply pick the Starlink network under Settings, then Wi-Fi, and enter the password, as you would for any other Wi-Fi; the Starlink app manages the dish. Calls over WhatsApp, Zoom, FaceTime or Teams work like on any internet connection, while normal phone calls and SMS still go through your mobile network.

How many phones one kit can handle depends on the router, which our guide to how many devices can connect to Starlink covers. If you need Starlink internet while travelling around the country, our guide to Starlink Roam in Nigeria explains the plan made for that.

Starlink 4G, 5G and 6G: clearing up the confusion

  • Starlink broadband is not a 4G or 5G mobile network. It is satellite internet delivered to a dish. There is no “Starlink 5G network” to join in Nigeria, and no Starlink 6G or 7G at all.
  • “5G” on a Starlink router usually means 5 GHz Wi-Fi. Starlink routers broadcast on the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi bands. The 5 GHz band is faster over short distances; 2.4 GHz reaches further through walls. That is a Wi-Fi setting, not a mobile network.
  • Starlink Mobile today works with 4G LTE phones. Engineers call satellite-to-phone service an NTN (non-terrestrial network), a term from 3GPP, the body that writes mobile standards.
  • Comparing Starlink with a 5G home router? That is a real choice, and our Starlink vs MTN 5G and Fibre X comparison sets out costs, speeds and data caps side by side.

The closest real thing to a “Starlink pocket Wi-Fi”: the Mini

If what you want is Starlink internet you can carry, the real product is the Starlink Mini. It is a laptop-sized dish with Wi-Fi built in, not a MiFi: it needs a clear view of the sky, a power source (it averages 25–40 W) and an active Starlink plan. It fits in a backpack and runs from mains power, 12–48 V DC or a powerful USB-C source. Our Starlink Mini guide for Nigeria covers the price, plans and set-up, and our guide on where to buy Starlink in Nigeria shows how to buy a genuine kit.

Starlink SIM and Direct to Cell FAQs

Does Starlink have a SIM card?

No. Starlink Mobile uses your existing operator’s SIM, so any “Starlink SIM” on sale is not a Starlink product.

Can I make phone calls with Starlink?

On a Starlink kit’s Wi-Fi, yes, through apps such as WhatsApp or Zoom. Starlink Mobile is focused on messaging and app data for now, with native voice calling not yet offered on T-Mobile’s version in the USA.

When will Starlink Direct to Cell launch in Nigeria?

Airtel Nigeria said in December 2025 that it would launch the service in 2026, subject to regulatory approval. As of October 2026 we have seen no launch or launch date announced.

Will I need a new phone for Starlink Mobile?

Not necessarily. In DR Congo it works on compatible LTE Android phones with no separate handset, but not yet on iPhones. Nigeria’s list of supported phones has not been published.

How much is Starlink Direct to Cell in Nigeria?

No price has been announced. In DR Congo it started with 30 free days and then runs on eligible Airtel data bundles.
